An Early VBS at Grace Lutheran Church

An Early VBS at Grace Lutheran Church

In 1929 we had our first Vacation Bible School and began the practice of boarding many of the children who lived out of town at the parsonage. This became an annual event and some years we provided lodging for 15 or 20 children. Mr. Chester Ronning, the principal of the Camrose Lutheran College was kind enough to permit us to borrow some cots from the school during our VBS. Classes were conducted every morning from 9 - 12. The courses offered instruction in the catechism, Bible stories, church history singing of hymns, etc. During the afternoon the children had their study period and supervised recreation under the watchful eye of the vicar. In the evening the children had their instruction through illustrated lectures

The building was then dedicated on the first Sunday in Advent, December 4th, 1927 with great festivities. The festivities were marred somewhat by the very cold weather. Some nights the temperature dropped down to 35 and 40 below zero. Although it was very cold on Sunday about 35 people attended the morning and afternoon services. However, in the evening there were at least two hundred people in attendance for the illustrated lecture and many had to stand.
